Kenko C-AF1 TelePlus MC 7 2x Extender Test in the Field

Staying with the Palm Springs location from last week, I went up to the top of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, camera pack on my back, to take some shots and test with my newly acquired Kenko C-AF1 TelePlus MC 7 2x Extender that I purchased from Craigslist to experiment with. Some of the initial test shots seemed OK and then there were a few that appeared to be washed out. Some shots were taken through a window which may have had something to do with the results being cloudy. In the field though I have seen some good results. Of course I have only used this combination a few times and like anything will have to test in different situations with different combinations. Having said that, also realize that putting a 2x extender on a 200mm will not be as clear as just using a 400mm lens. Keep posted for more combination tests.

This is a shot using just the Canon EF 70-200mm f4L IS lens mounted on a Canon 5D full-frame body at ISO 100, 200mm, f8.0 and 1/125th shutter speed.
Distant Peak 200mm No 2x Extender

This is a shot using the Canon EF 70-200mm f4L IS lens mounted on a Kenko C-AF1 2x Extender on a Canon 5D full-frame body at ISO 400, 200mm, f8.0 and 1/160th shutter speed from the same spot. The only on-camera setting I changed was the ISO so that I could take this shot hand held and be less prone to camera shake by keeping the shutter speed relatively the same. I could have set the ISO even higher to increase the shutter speed. Any slight movement when fully zoomed in will be magnified in the resulting image so you should select as fast a shutter speed as possible. Be careful here though. Without a good noise filter, the resulting images may contain too much noise and the detail can get lost when trying to process out the noise.

Awesome difference! I have been thinking also to obtain 2x Extender to my Nikkor zoom lens next summer. Your comparison encourages me to do so.

    Thank You.
